November 27 marks Giving Tuesday, a day when millions of people around the nation support their favorite charities and nonprofits. In the spirit of celebrating philanthropy and good works, this year Seton Hall is dedicating all Giving Tuesday fundraising to the Division of Volunteer Efforts (DOVE).
For 28 years, DOVE has given Setonians the opportunity to perform meaningful service locally, in needy areas across the United States, and internationally in countries such as El Salvador and Haiti. DOVE partners with agencies at all levels to accomplish projects that improve the world.
"DOVE is one of our greatest engines for creating servant leaders," said Anthony Bellucci, Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations and Annual Giving. "It helps people in need while igniting our students' passion for making the world a better place. DOVE demonstrates the true character of our University."
This is the second year DOVE will benefit from Seton Hall's Giving Tuesday efforts. In 2017, 358 alumni, parents, students, faculty and staff members raised $18,656 for initiatives that took students to Newark, Philadelphia and beyond.
Locally, programs range from student mentoring and visiting the elderly in nursing homes to serving in soup kitchens. DOVE also plans campus-wide programs such as food and turkey drives for Thanksgiving, toy drives for the needy in Appalachia, and carnivals for disabled guests from local group homes, among many others.
"Releasing the DOVEs" service trips bring Pirates to West Virginia, El Salvador and elsewhere to work in solidarity with people who struggle the most. The trips focus on understanding poverty and injustice, building relationships and engaging in a ministry of presence.
"Even alumni who graduated before DOVE was founded appreciate what this group does for the University and communities around the globe," Bellucci said. "Last year's Giving Tuesday response was tremendous, and I'm hoping this year will surpass what we accomplished in 2017."
Giving Tuesday is one of the final events in True Blue Month, which provides opportunities to achieve True Blue status, a special designation for Pirates who stay connected to the University in different ways each year.
