Tom Verducci, speaker for Baseball and Spring Training: Covering America’s Game Today

The College of Communication and the Arts is proud to announce a three-part round-table discussion series focused on exploring trending topics in the sports industry. The series will offer a bird's eye view into the industry as speakers from leading outlets such as Sports Illustrated, ESPN, and The MLB and NHL Networks share their personal advice and professional experiences.

B.J. Schecter, one of the College's Professionals-in-Residence, will moderate this ongoing series that explores revolutionary dynamics in sports communication. "Bringing leaders in the industry to campus and giving students an opportunity to learn from and interact with the best in sports media is an important part of our new program," said Schecter. "Our transformative sports media program is based on a balance of education and professional development and this speaker series accomplishes both objectives."

Learn the latest reporting, writing and storytelling strategies from the best in the business, featuring:

  • Tom Verducci, Sports Illustrated and, is a three-time National Sportswriter of the Year (2014, 2015 and 2016). Additionally, he serves as a game and studio analyst for FOX Sports and MLB Network.
  • Jayson Stark, ESPN, is a former senior baseball sportswriter. He is the author of three books and is also known for his 21 career years at The Philadelphia Inquirer.
  • Marc Weiner, MLB & NHL Network, is coordinating producer with over 25 years of experience in the field. Previously, he also held producer positions with ESPN.

  • Paul Fichtenbaum, The Athletic, currently serves as the chief content officer of the subscription website with previous editor experience with Sports Illustrated. During his 25-year career with SI, he won numerous awards, including an Ellie, Emmy and Webby. In 2014 he was named Editor of the Year by Ad Age.
  • Dana O'Neil, The Athletic, is a senior writer for The Fieldhouse, has worked for more than 25 years as a sports writer, covering the Final Four, the Super Bowl, World Series, NBA Finals and NHL playoffs. She worked previously at ESPN and the Philadelphia Daily News and has been honored with multiple writing awards.

Investigative Journalism: Earning Trust and Creating Complex Stories

Award-winning authors, Jeff Benedict and Armen Keteyian, share their expertise and experiences in developing high-quality, investigative pieces in light of their forthcoming biography on golf giant, Tiger Woods, featuring:

  • Jeff Benedict, Sports Illustrated, is a New York Times best-selling author, a special features writer for Sports Illustrated, and a television and film producer. He has written fifteen books on topics ranging from violence against women to a deadly E. coli outbreak to the discovery of a 10,000-year-old skeleton in North America.
  • Armen Keteyian, 60 Minutes Sports, is a long-time contributing correspondent to the sports edition of the CBS News magazine on Showtime. This 11-time award winner has decades of experience as a sports journalist, beginning in print as an investigative reporter up through network news and cable television sports.
